About the Prague beer brewing

There was a small mess in beer brewing rights in the middle ages. One on the king´s law said that every Prague citizen is allowed to make a beer and another law said the only citizens living close to city walls can brew. Once the king was coming back from his journey and there was such a big storm so he needed to find shelter. Accidently he knocked on the first door and he was let in. The kind entered the brewery. The brew master welcomed him very well and offered him the beer. The king like that so much and started to talk with the brew master about the production, etc. When he was told how bad the laws are he promised to change it immediately and also ordered to have such a good beer on his table every day!

What is more, if any citizen saves the money for the phone, he is not the winner! :-) For a very another high amount to be paid every month he gets 200 minutes and 20 sms. At the end of the 10th century the area around the Prague castle became a very important trade center. The reason is very simple. One Jewish merchant said: "Prague is built from stone and lime, and it has the biggest trade center. Slavs are on the whole courageous and brave... They occupy the lands which are the most fertile and abundant with a good food supply."

This style of a lager comes from sunny California and was developer in 18th century. In 18th century there was limited access to ice or ways to refrigerate. The result was light amber lager with some characteristics of an ale(warm fermentation).

The only person helping him was his fellow Podiven. Together they were distributing the wafers to Prague churches. One day in winter they were taking the wafers to the Curch of Saint Cosma and Damian and Podiven was complaining that his feet were freezing. Communistic propaganda about the Christmas in Czechoslovakia

It may seem weird but the propaganda in the socialistic Czechoslovakia was active even in the Christmas time!

For ages the symbol of Christmas and also the person who brings the gifts in the Czech lands is the baby Jesus.

And it used to be very common for the people to have a small Christmas crib at home with the baby Jesus being born in the barn. And around the barn there are simple and poor people coming to give the presents for the Jesus.

In 1962 the Czechoslovak president had a Christmas speech saying that Christmas as many things are changing… It is not going to be that the poor people would symbolically come to the poor barn where they belong. The new symbol of the Czechoslovak Christmas should the Russian Grandpa frost who is a well-dressed good looking grandpa bringing the joy from the east…

As it seems fortunately no propaganda can change ancient traditions!

History of Christmas tree in Czech lands

Decorating of Christmas tree is a custom which appeared in the Czech land in the beginning of the 19th century.

The first tree in Bohemia was probably in the house of the director of the Prague theater Jan Karel Leibich who was born in Germany and in Germany the tree had a bit longer tradition. People started to like it and especially in the cities. This custom came to the villages in 1860´s .

In the beginning the tree was decorated in a very simple way, usually with a special bakery, dry fruits, colorful papers . The tree was also hanging from the ceiling, pointing down!

Communistic China

Through the last decade many people were predicting that the regime of communistic Chine is going to fall. One of these predictors was Gordon G. Shank who in the middle of 2001 in his book The Coming Collapse of China predicted that the Communist Party would fall from power in a decade. Well we have almost the end of the year 2012 and this is definitely not happening.

What is also unusual is the fact that China had double-digit growth in the last decade and many economists were predicting very hard landing on the ground. And what happened at the end of the year of 2012? China´s growth is still amazing - 8%!

It seems we have to wait for some major changes until next years...

Cubans can get passports!

Travelling for Cubans is going to be easier than ever. According to the Cuban newspaper Granma the Cubans will not need special permission to leave the country and can obtain passports, starting next year. Until today if any Cuban wanted to leave the country, he needed to ask for a special "leaving visa" which costed 500 USD. Just for your information the average income in Cuba is 20 dollars per month.

But nothing is as great as it seems. The passport is not going to be issued to doctor, engineers and other educated people with university degree. Cuba is just afraid to loose the "good brains".

Is that beginning of the end of one of the last communistic regimes in the world?

IBU

How to describe bitterness? Because of the fact that the bitterness could be very subjective an universal unit needed to be invented. The international scale is called IBU= International Bittering Unit. Generally speaking it describes how much hops(which is the ingredience responsible for the bitterness) is in the beer. The average is about 30 IBU.

The technical limit is about 100 IBU which may have for example IPA(India Pale Ale).

There another scale called EBU = European Bittering Unit. This unit is very similar to IBU but small diffreneces may appear.

The global trends in beer bitterness

Since the year of 2006 the group Barth-Hass is exemining the bitterness of the beers. Every year there are more and more samples needed to be tested to make an overview of the matter among all the continents. But according to the results of last three years we can not say that the ratio of the hops is decreasing. Which is a good news.

What we can see and which results we can simplify are these:
the lagres made in USA, Latin America and China have a low bitterness (cca 8mg/liter),
Euopean beers and mainly the Pilsener beers have much more bitterness (cca 20mg/liter),
African and Australian beers have just little bit lesss bitterness (16mg/liter),
Russian and Japanese beers have even less bitterness(13 mg/liter).

ANNIVERSARY TO THE POLITICAL PROCESSES

Today, on December 3rd in 1952 the former communist politician Vladimir Clementis was executed during the political processes in the begin of the 1950s. It was a part of the so called "Rudolf Slánský Trial" at the end of which 14 people have been sentences to death and executed. As a former minister of foreign affairs and high positioned communist official he was accused of various crimes and also treason and being a "bourgeois nationalist". In 1948 during the "Victorious February" he was was standing next to president Klement Gottwald and after his execution he was removed from the photographs made on that day of these men together. This photograph can be seen during the Communism and Nuclear Bunker Tour on displaz as part of the bunker expositions.
